I really enjoyed reading this book! I expected to skip pages, reading only the poems that interested me, but I didn't! I liked every poem! The topics addressed are varied, relevant and thought-provoking. I actually laughed out loud more than once, especially at the author's lighthearted take on not being rich. Everyday occurrences are uniquely depicted and social injustices poignantly contrasted. This book has wide appeal. Five stars!
Very good! As Jay Hargrave touches on and explores an array of subjects in his poems, you can feel the depth of thought which has gone into certain life scenarios and imaginations. While you read his words, you will feel his compassion, love, humor and sadness as you delve into the chambers of his heart and mind. I'm looking forward to another publication by this author.
You can't judge a book by its cover and for those of you who are put off by the sinister appearance of the book, no worries. Its a delicious mixture between sweet and salty verses to make you either laugh out loud or sit down and think. Normally poem books find me skipping selections but not this one. You can truly see the writers personality in this piece.
I am not ordinarily a poetry fan, but these poems are so clever and fun to read! In one particular poem, the author is contemplating the purpose for hunting animals. He doesn't understand why some people love to hunt, so he says, "I am what I am, you are what you are. Some might be the jelly, some the jar; You might be water, I soda with fizz, but since I'm black, I is what I is." )
There doesn't seem to be a theme to the book - there are just a lot of great poems on various topics. I think everyone will find themselves relating to many of these poems wondering why they hadn't thought to put their thoughts into words quite that way.
In one poem, Mr. Hargrave is wondering why he lives in a cold climate. He says, "My frame in its make is cast thinly, not of full beefy stock packaged thick; there's more hope for me swooping down chimneys, than the jolly, plump likes of Saint Nick." But of course he has no burden to brave the cold weather to perform that task.
Those are just a couple of examples of the wonderful style in which these poems are written. I love this book and highly recommend it to everyone whether you're a poetry lover or not.
